چکیده

In the rapidly growing pace of information technology advancement, making the right decisions about software upgrades and hardware purchases becomes an important factor in maximizing one‟s SAS investment. With a wide range of SAS products and infrastructure platforms available, one challenge faced by SAS administrators is choosing the optimal bundle in software selection and hardware configuration. The case study presented in this paper evaluates the performance level of Base SAS product versions, SAS® 8.2, SAS® 9.1.3, and SAS® 9.2, on selected UNIX SPARC server architectures. In a controlled environment, a series of performance simulations were executed to quantify input/output time, CPU time, and other process statistics among various SAS versions and UNIX configurations. The benchmark measurement provides first-hand tangible insights for administrators and managers in making informed SAS purchases and upgrade decisions to meet specific needs.

Getting from SAS 9.1.3 to SAS 9.2: Migration Tools or Promotion Tools

If you are running a metadata server in your SAS ® 9.1.3 environment, you must upgrade your metadata when you move to SAS ® 9.2. There are two possible approaches to take. The first approach is a migration, which will essentially copy your SAS 9.1.3 environment over to SAS 9.2 as part of your SAS 9.2 installation process. The second approach is to make a fresh start by installing SAS 9.2 first,...

SPARC SPARC Station VAX

With the increasing availability of multiprocessor platforms based on dierent types of archi-tectures (shared memory, distributed memory, network based), users will be increasingly faced with heterogeneous and distributed multiprocessor computing facilities. Programming environment concepts have to be found which enable the user to program and use these heterogeneous computing resources, consis...

Pathlengths of SPEC Benchmarks for PA-RISC, MIPS, and SPARC

The total instruction pathlength and instruction frequency counts are measured for the SPEC89 benchmark programs on the PA-RISC architecture and compared with previously published information for the MIPS and SPARC architectures. The PA-RISC architecture typically requires significantly fewer instructions than the other two architectures for the same benchmark. The differences in counts for ins...

196-2007: Pipes and Threads: Performance Testing of Advanced Scalability Features in SAS®9

SAS v9 provides many new features of interest to users with large data sets. Many of the commonly used procedures are multi-treaded. This allows users to harness the full power of multi-processor architectures to enhance the efficiency of some tasks. In addition, SAS/Connect allows users to spawn multiple independent processes to execute custom parallel processing solutions. SAS/Connect also en...

Taking (Computer) Architecture Seriously

There seems to be little consensus on what an agent architecture is. In this paper I will talk about architectures in computer design, and programming languages, and what their distinctions are. I will then discuss agent architectures relative to that distinction. Finally, I will discuss recent work I have done on building better computer architectures for agency. One of the problems with writi...
